Practical Tips to a “New Year, New You”!
Here’s a phrase that is thrown around a lot: New Year, New You!
And while it might be cliché to think that we will all suddenly become happier and healthier just because it’s the new year, let’s actually take a moment and ask ourselves: Well, why can’t we?!
Introducing a fitness schedule into your weekly routine will not only make you feel better physically, but your mental ability and energy will dramatically increase. And the new year truly is the best time to start.
The main thing with new year’s resolutions, particularly when it comes to health and fitness, is actually sticking to them, which is where many people fail. But not this time!
Here are some tips on how you can make the new year all about a new you.
Set Realistic Goals
When you’re starting out on an exercise plan, it’s important to be realistic. Too many people want to achieve their goals instantly, and feel discouraged when they realise things take time.
Set your goals, and then devise a plan on how you will achieve them over time. It’s also important to consider your individuality when it comes to exercise. There are dozens of different sports, classes and exercises that you can get involved in, but you need to find one that suits you and your lifestyle.
Start small, and build your way up, otherwise you risk getting overwhelmed and giving up.
Workout With A Friend
There’s no better way to keep focused and motivated than exercising with a friend. Find a friend with similar goals, and work out together to keep each other on track. If you know your friend is relying on you, you’re less likely to back out and not attend the class or go to the gym. And just think – when you both achieve your goals you can celebrate together!
Keep A Journal
Achieving goals means starting somewhere and finishing somewhere else. So why not document it along the way! When it comes to exercise and health, this is a great way to stay motivated as you can see your progress and how far you’ve come.
If your goal is weight loss, take photos and measurements at the start and then as you progress. If you are aiming to achieve fitness goals, keep track of times or reps, and see how well you beat them as you get fitter and faster.
Healthy Eating
The most important thing you can do for yourself is introduce a healthy diet. Look at ways you can add healthier choices into your lifestyle.
Search for healthy, low fat recipes and meal prep each week so that you are organised. Include plenty of fresh vegetables and salad into your diet, and swap sugary snacks for fresh fruit. Cut down on caffeine and alcohol, and always make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
Make a healthy diet the number one priority when you set your new year’s resolutions!
Have Fun!
Exercise should be fun. You should enjoy what you are doing, and feel good afterwards. If you are not enjoying what you are doing, try switching it up. Perhaps you’re getting bored using the same weights – maybe try a class. If you’re bored with running on the treadmill, try a run along the beach one evening instead.
With so many new classes on offer at your local gym, you’re sure to find something that you enjoy!
