How to manage your health and fitness this Christmas

Fitting your fitness into your schedule this holiday season!

With the Festive season upon us, we are all extra busy and getting out of routine. Christmas parties, catch up with family and friends, and of course, extra over-indulging with food and drink may result in a few extra kilos. But it doesn’t have to! If you plan ahead, you can keep up your workouts and still enjoy all the Christmas season has to offer!

Here are a few suggestions on how to manage your health and fitness this Christmas and fit your fitness routine into your busy schedule this holiday season!

Early Morning Workouts

There’s nothing better than starting the day with a good exercise session. It wakes you up, releases endorphins to energise you for the day, and you’ll go through the rest of the day with the satisfaction of knowing your work out is already done! The sun is rising earlier in the summer time, so why not get up earlier and hit the gym before work; or even just go for a walk or a jog around the block. You’ll be glad you did!

Short Sessions

If you’re an avid gym-goer, you’ll know all about the different classes that are on offer. But when you add up the time it takes you to get to the gym, showering afterward, and getting home before your next social engagement, it’s too easy to say: “I just don’t have time” and simply stop going to classes. So instead of completely missing out, try a shorter work-out session or class. Try HIIT or CIRCUIT classes. Because these are designed to be high energy workouts, the sessions are shorter and you can be in and out in just 45minutes!

Keep Up Your Strength

A big tip for maintaining your fitness during the Festive season is to keep up your strength training. You’ve worked hard all year to build all that muscle, so you don’t want to let it go now! You might be tempted to use lightweights and just do some cardio, but keep your focus and use the time you have to lift weights and keep up your strength. This is particularly important during this time of year when you might be eating more – you don’t want that Christmas food to result in Christmas fat!

Quality Over Quantity

Your workouts don’t have to come to a standstill completely just because you are busy; all you need is some good planning! Look at each coming week, and plan your exercise around your schedule. You may not be able to get to the gym every day, so instead, plan good quality workouts for the days you can go. Speak to a trainer at your gym and come up with a plan that will keep you on track during this busy time.

Watch What You Eat

Eat, drink and be merry is the theme – but as always, remember moderation. Over-indulging during the Festive season could lead to a lot of regrets when January rolls around. So, look for healthy options where you can, limit your alcohol intake, and drink plenty of water – and make sure you keep active!
