Whenever we set out on a fitness journey, we always hope for fast results. Most of the time, this is not going to happen. Your fitness journey is going to take time and will be filled with ups and downs.
One day your workout will make you feel great, and you’ll look forward to getting back to the gym for more. The next day you might be tired or unwell, and your workout is more of a struggle. Some days you just won’t feel like exercising at all, whereas other days you’ll do more than you’d planned to.
This is all completely normal, and believe it or not, every day you work out you are making progress.
To be successful on your fitness journey you need to be adaptable to be able to change your plans and strategies to make it work for you. Stay motivated and focussed, and never give up!
If you’re feeling a little discouraged and thinking about giving up on your fitness journey, here’s a few tips to get you back on track.
STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS
Controlling your thoughts is the first step to avoiding and overcoming discouragement, and one of the worst thoughts we have is comparing ourselves to other people.
Watching others working out and comparing yourself to them is dangerous for your mind-set, but also wastes your energy because you don’t know their full story. You may think they are stronger or better or faster than you, but they might just be having a good day while you’re having a bad one. Or they may have been working out for many years, while you are still starting out.
Other people you see in the gym are at different stages of their own fitness journey, but that doesn’t make them better than you. Be kind to yourself and stop putting yourself down by comparing.
FOCUS ON ONE GOAL AT A TIME
One of the biggest mistakes people make in fitness is setting too many goals at a time. Having goals is great, and having several goals is also a good thing. But put all your energy into on goal at a time, and once you have conquered it, go onto your next achievement. If you try to do too much at once, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed and ready to give up.
WORK OUT WITH A FRIEND
It can’t be said enough – embarking on your fitness journey with a friend will help the both of you stay focussed and motivated each step of the way. You’ll both have your individual goals to achieve, and you will share these plans with your workout friend. Then on days when you are feeling unmotivated, they will be there to encourage you, and vice versa. Working out with a friend will also give you an added incentive to keep going because you don’t want to let your friend down. Keep at it, keep building each other up, and you’ll get there together!
PLAY THE LONG GAME
Playing the long game is extremely important in fitness. Ask any professional trainer or athlete, and they will tell you that it took them YEARS to achieve what they have now. You may want fast results for little effort, but you need to be realistic. To achieve your goals, you need to put in the effort and the time. Knowing this and accepting this will help you avoid becoming discouraged when you don’t see immediate results.
