How many times have you said to yourself: This time I WILL stick to my new year’s resolutions…only to find your motivation has dropped off by the middle of January?!
Make 2022 your year! If your new year’s resolution is to take better care of yourself and to get fit and healthy, you will have a much better year if you stick to your resolution.
Here’s some top tips on how to stick to your goals, thanks to the team from Foundry Fitness!
Write down your goals and keep them where you can see them!
This is the best way to stay focused by concentrating on the result that you are working towards. Keep your goals where you will see them every day – a note stuck to your fridge works best, or maybe pin them up next to your desk at work. Every time you see your note, you’ll remember how important it is to keep going and not to give up!
Have a plan
It’s one thing to know WHAT you want to achieve but you also need a plan on HOW you will achieve it! Design your exercise plan with the help of a personal trainer or someone you trust, and make sure you are doing the right exercises to suit you. Same with any changes in your diet, perhaps speak to a nutritionist or get some healthy eating advice online and plan your meals to suit.
Have small monthly milestones
One of the biggest reasons many people quit is because they set HUGE goals and then feel overwhelmed in reaching their targets. The best advice is to set smaller goals each month and know that achieving each smaller milestone will eventually lead you to your end goal.
Tell your friends so they can help!
Another way to make sure you are sticking to your plan is to make yourself accountable. Tell your friends what you are doing and get them to help keep you motivated to keep going. The encouragement you need will come from the people closest to you. When you feel you want to just give up, they will be there to remind you how far you’ve come and to tell you to keep going!
Track your progress
There’s nothing like the feeling of seeing your progress, and sometimes that’s all the encouragement you need to stay motivated. Find a good app that you can use daily to track your weight, fitness, and meals. Weigh yourself and take measurements regularly and record these too. Soon enough you will start seeing results and will feel great about what you have achieved!
And we don’t mean with FOOD! Every month, give yourself a treat as a reward for your hard work. Maybe some new workout clothes or splurging on some new headphones to take to the gym. Rewards make you feel good and keep you motivated to keep going for another month.
In any exercise plan, rest days are important both for the body and the mind. You don’t have to go hard every day of the week, and it’s okay to take a day off. Same as it is okay to take a “rest” day from your healthy eating and enjoy a pizza and a glass of wine with your friends. If you place too many restrictions, you may find yourself feeling resentful, and may want to give up altogether. Plan for a day off, and then get back onto the next day!
